A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the hours before former President Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which registered on the site recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on recently seeks to ban public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to political events.

The industry were examined under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
