RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
