Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
