A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential threats posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been told to refrain from talking about classified information in all cars.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a issue in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Defence Background
The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The broader defence situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, including transport use to communication habits.
