Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications need to be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
